Green Architecture Personified...

WNW have been working on a project in the Parkwood area wherein the principles of green architecture are being simplified and personified. We have gone through the process of using firm scientific principles, architectural design and existing exemplars to create a building the with work passively in its hot and cold Johannesburg climate. With principles from Bernoulli's Equation, Heat Stacking, Energy Loss and Temperature Gradients WNW have created a building that will keep its inhabitants both comfortable and healthy without the need for air conditioning. While the building is still in its infancy in terms of Green Standards; WNW are compiling documentation to ensure that every aspect of the building be green, right from demolition to the final coats of paint on the exterior. Green Architecture has never been so honest...

Technically speaking...

Brian has spent the past two weeks in the UNISA physics labs where he has had the opportunity to put the theory into practice. New ideas in energy generation and light manipulation have been found and WNW will now be able to employ these ideas. Whether it be using light falling onto building structure to generate electricity or glass to change the colours of a building's interior throughout the day.WNW are on the cutting edge with new and innovative design.

In the pursuit of green

Members of WNW (Johann le Roux and Brian Knott) recently went to the Green Building Office v1 course in the pursuit of finding the path to greener buildings. A lot has been learnt from the course and with the members writing the exam shortly, WNW will be implementing greener design principles to their already environmentally friendly approach to the built environment.

Modern take on warehousing

Warehousing is often a dreary and dull addition to the built environment. In an age where people are living in clean and stylish spaces one wonders if warehouses don't perhaps require a shifting in paradigms. WNW have taken on the challenge and are transforming the dull and dreary into adventurous and fun with this new warehouse in Tunney, Germiston.

W+W supports Earth Hour 2010

This weekend on the 27th of March the world is invited to participate in the WWF's global Earth Hour 2010. On this day at 8.30pm everyone globally is asked to switch off their lights (can also be all electricity/electrical appliances) for one hour. W+W urges the readers of this blog to take part in this initiative and visit the WWF's website on http://www.earthhour.org/About.aspx and make your voice heard. Here is a snippet from the website: 'Earth Hour 2010 takes place on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm (local time) and is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future.' All participants are welcome to take pictures and we'll load them next week. So, have fun in the dark!
